About the Easy A11y Guide

We started this because we felt that accessibility doesn’t have to be hard.

It was so hard for people to get started with accessibility. We heard the same complaints time and time again. We wanted to create a system to solve them. A system where you didn’t need to spend 100s of hours learning accessibility.

A system where you could hand off pre-written done-for-you procedures to your team and get things done today.

  • I don’t have time to learn accessibility. It’s true, most organizations do not have the dozens of hours it takes to learn accessibility followed by the dozens of hours needed to create procedures to implement it. So we did that for you. We have gone deep and wide into the field of accessibility and written the guides and checklists for your team to follow.
  • Accessibility is too confusing. The official W3C understanding documents are written at college and above reading levels. They are not easy to understand. So we have distilled a combination of the best practices and documents into specific checklists with what to do and what to avoid. We aim for all of our checklists to be 5th-grade reading level (that’s about age 10-11 for those not in the US).
  • I need this project done today. We understand, we all have deadlines. The tools and procedures we build are designed to help you get your projects done without holding you up.
  • Can’t you just do it for me? We can. We have specific options you can purchase depending on where you are in your web development process where we do it for you. The earlier you include accessibility in your process, the cheaper it tends to be.

Why should you trust Easy A11y Guide?

The guide was created by Gen Herres, DHS Trusted Tester for Section 508, well known speaker and accessibility advocate. She’s spoken at meetups, on podcasts, at WordCamp US, and at WP Accessibility Day, and is an IAAP member.

Our team members have various certifications including CPACC and WAS from IAAP.

My ongoing consultancy with Gen Herres for WS Form has been an invaluable experience! Her deep expertise has provided us with tailored advice that’s transforming how we ensure accessibility within our WordPress form plugin.

Gen provides practical, clear insights that directly enhance the accessibility of WS Form, making it easier to use for all users. I highly recommend her to anyone seeking personalized guidance in this crucial area!

Recently, we chose the “Axe core pass” option for our latest project, Vantom Group, and Gen built the site and expertly handled the accessibility corrections during development. The result was a website that not only stayed true to our original designs but also passed the Axe core tests with flying colors. I highly recommend Gen and Anphira for anyone looking to build a beautiful, accessible website.

Why the name Easy A11y Guide?

A11y is the abbreviation for accessibility. It removes 11 letters between a and y. It’s also commonly pronounced “ally”, which means friendly association, or alliance. The goal of this site is to help others make their websites friendly to all people, regardless of the abilities of those people.

Our goal is to help you create sites that are great for people.

We choose “easy” because it doesn’t have to be a challenge to get started with accessibility. We wanted to make it easier for people to make websites that were friendly to all people.

And of course, we have a dog as our icon because Gen has always had German Shepherd dogs and loves them. Also, dogs provide assistance for many people with disabilities.
