I don’t have time to learn web accessibility. One of the most common pushbacks when talking about web accessibility is that people don’t have time to learn it. And that’s true.
Most comprehensive accessibility courses take 20 plus hours and to actually become proficient in accessibility takes a hundred plus hours of practice. Most people don’t have time for that.
At least not right now.
Right now you have a deadline to meet. But most people don’t need a comprehensive understanding of web accessibility to be able to implement it.
Think about it this way. You don’t need to be a professional plumber to replace your kitchen sink garbage disposal. I know, I’ve done it. And I’m most definitely not a professional plumber.

Let’s continue with our kitchen sink analogy. You don’t need to have a comprehensive knowledge of plumbing. You do need to be able to follow directions and safe procedures.
Web accessibility is similar. Let’s say you’re creating a static mock up of a website. There are definitely elements of accessibility that apply to you and there’s a lot of elements that don’t. What you need is someone who has already gone through those elements and determined which ones. You need to implement and who has written out a straightforward checklist of exactly how you need to implement them.
We’ve created a number of these checklists for our clients and made their lives significantly less stressful. In fact, many of the designers that we’ve worked with have told us how they were actually able to produce their designs faster because they had fewer decisions to make. So you’re right. You don’t have time to learn web accessibility comprehensively.
