What is web accessibility?
Web accessibility is making your website usable for people, regardless of their abilities.
Hi, I’m Gen Herres from the Easy A11y Guide, where we try to make accessibility easier to implement.
Through done-for-you tools and processes, people aren’t perfect and we don’t live in a perfect world. It would be nice if we were and we did, but sadly we aren’t perfect and we don’t live in a perfect world. We want to create websites that work for real people in the real world. Every day people encounter difficulties in their everyday lives and many of those challenges are invisible.
You can’t tell who has dyslexia. Irlen syndrome, color impairment, or a myriad of other difficulties just by looking at them. You also can’t tell which of your website visitors have a sleeping baby in the background, or a very loud teenager playing video games.
If you want to look at some numbers, 79 percent of U.S. adults have some sort of vision impairment, and because people aren’t human, these adults take their corrective lenses off. And now they’re taking their imperfect eyesight and trying to work with your website, probably when they’re tired and stressed. About 20 percent of US adults have some level of dyslexia or Irlen syndrome.
This means they can have difficulty with reading. About 8 percent of men are colorblind, which means they just don’t see colors quite right. All of this put together means that the majority of people visiting your website.
It’s making your websites usable for the majority of your visitors, because if you don’t, those visitors can and will go elsewhere to find what they need.
